There have been major changes in employment legislation which will impact on how companies and Employee Assistance providers will provide services to workers with mental health disabilities. Under safety and health legislation employer’s duty of care evolved and equality legislation classed mental health as a disability requiring reasonable accommodation for affected workers. But this has changed significantly in recent years, as the impact and costs of worker ill health, both physical and psychological, are increasingly recognised.

In July of 2021 a new global standard ISO 45003 was published and this and provides guidance on how Safety Managers treat mental health as a disability and a safety risk. This is the first international standard to provide guidance on psychological health and safety at work. The new standard will address many safety risks that can contribute to work related stress, depression and anxiety and adversely impact worker mental health. It will also provide a major challenge to EAP providers to move towards a risk management compliance based as distinct from an employee counselling only approach.

Two leading experts Maurice Quinlan Director of the EAP Institute Ireland and Don Jorgensen Ph.D., CEAP, USA  will present a ground breaking on line course on Thursday 22nd and Tuesday 27th September 2022 to outline a new direction of Employee Support Services (ESS) and Employee Support Therapy (EST) which will shape the future safety responses to workplace mental health.
